The Colonie Junior Raiders Youth Football Program Celebrated First Official Season with a Grand Opening Picnic on Aug. 30, 2013

Colonie, N.Y. – As summer slowly winds down, our young local athletes gear up for their first season with the Colonie Junior Raiders, the official youth football program affiliated with South Colonie Central School District.
The Colonie Junior Raiders are a nonprofit organization formed to give every child in the South Colonie Central School District an opportunity to play football regardless of weight or experience. To kickoff the season, an official ribbon cutting ceremony took place on Friday, August 30, 2013 at 5:30 p.m. at the West Albany Pocket Park Pavilion, 107 Exchange Street Albany, NY 12203.
When forming the league, Coach Matt Stein, President of the Colonie Junior Raiders, and Coach Bill Roemer, Executive VP of Football for the Colonie Junior Raiders, wanted to differentiate themselves by eliminating weight restrictions, lowering registration fees, and limiting team sizes. They also wanted to utilize their relationships with South Colonie School District. (At South Colonie, Matt Stein is the Head Modified Football Coach and Bill Roemer is the Head Varsity Coach.)
“Everything will be taught consistently from level to level,” explains Coach Stein. “Starting in kindergarten our young athletes will learn all of the skills, drills, and terminology that will eventually be put to use when playing at the high school level.”
Additional benefits of playing for the Colonie Junior Raiders include:
“The great thing about this program is that it’s our program,” explains Coach Roemer. “We can remove the ruthless competitiveness of a playoff system and concentrate on what’s most important, making sure our athletes are safe and having fun.”
